Two Friends at McDonalds? |
Compulsive eating is like smoking or taking drugs.and is the main characteristic of food addiction. Like smoking and taking drugs (heroin or cocaine), junk food may be addictive. Too much eating of junk food like burgers, chips and sausages, program your brain into hankering more sugar, salt and fat-laden grubs.
Recently, researchers have found that bingeing on high-calorie foods are addictive and make you crave for fatty food. The urge to eat the fried French fries or burgers is as strong as taking cocaine or nicotine. Obesity is inevitable because the person would be irritable and restless and the only way to calm him is when he satisfies the urge by eating the desired food and that would be intake of high calorie food. The experiments were carried out on rats and the results were amazing. The rats were fed high calorie food and it was observed that they become compulsive eaters. The brain triggers addiction like response in brain which makes them eat even though they are not hungry. The junk food became so appealing to the rat that when junk food was replaced by healthy food, it refused to eat at all and went on starvation diet. The scientist tested it continuously for two weeks and the rat rejected to take any food. The studies show that the brain gets trained to respond to high content of sugar, fat filled food and salt.
The big question is ‘Who is to blame?’
Are we to blame for eating habits of our children? Of course yes.
We have very often seen that children tend to put on weight if they have changed the eating habit. Particularly if they have been eating fresh food for years and then suddenly start on with burgers, French fries or steaks. They will take no time to look healthier within six months time. It is due to the fact that the glands are used to producing the hormones and enzymes required by the body and the sudden change doesn’t given enough time to stimulate and produce the kind of hormones required to cope up with the high fat content and processed food. The result is the high calorie deposits in the form of fat and easiest place is around waist.
The reaction is different with people who have been consuming fast food from the very beginning. To add spice to this is addictive cola and fizzy drinks. To make it worse, now they are available in different flavours. It has been observed that these drinks instantly get into the bloodstream and make children hyper. The teachers face more challenging behaviour immediately after break.
The schools who have banned fizzy drinks in school premises have seen some change of behaviour to positive side but the schools who are not adhering to strict rules and allowing them to bring their own fizzy drinks to schools have still tough time dealing with poor behaviour of pupils.
