Obama is the first man to invite the officials from 47 countries to nuclear proliferation summit on 12 April 2010 at white house. The main focus of the summit was to discuss the threat posed by nuclear terrorism.
Iranian president was against the summit and said that it is to humiliate them and they have rejected to be the part of this treaty. The international dignitaries are concerned about Iran who is indulging more into producing nuclear weapons than limiting themselves to nuclear energy.
However Obama said they will support them in using radio active material to produce nuclear energy if they would allow UN inspections.
Majority Americans are in favour of eliminating all nuclear weapons and even agree UN Security Council’s intervention to use force to stop countries from acquiring the nuclear weapon. In exchange they would supply them the fuel they require for energy production.
There is a mixed feeling about the NPT as to how much control should UN have. However there is a appositive approach between two powerful nations signing ‘Nuclear Arm Reduction Treaty’ replacing ‘Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty’ of 1991.
The progress of this treaty will be assessed in 2012.
